When asked about their current economic condition, most people respond with something like "I'm fine but the guy down the street is really in trouble." I think it's time that to stop worrying about the people down the street and worry about your own problems.
If everyone in the country would just take care of their own business we wouldn't be in this mess. Government programs designed to help the "little guy" have backfired. We're in the worst financial crisis in a long time precisely because we (the US government) couldn't stay out of people's business.
We have a bank bailout designed to help the richest industry in the world. How ludicrous is that?
Now the automobile industry is next in line with their hands out. We can't let them fail because of all the jobs and suppliers, etc, etc. Again, the government is going to be poking around where it doesn't belong.
Communism has failed. Every time a country is in trouble, it turns to capitalism for hope. Look at China, they become more capitalistic not more socialist, that's why their economy is growing.
How do we hope to get out of this situation by becoming more socialist? Again, this all stems from people trying to tell others what to do and how to live their lives.
Keep your nose out of other people's business. Until your debt free and have a fortune in the bank you have no business telling other people how to live their life. I'm not talking about advisc. I'm talking about using the power of the government to enforce lifestyle decisions.
If every American just looked to their own prosperity first, we'd be much better off. Consider this, when you ride in an airplane with a small child, your're instructed to put your own mask on first in case of emergency. Why? Because if you pass out, there is no way you can help the child.
Now think about this, how can you help your family if you can't help yourself. Get yourself out of debt before worrying about your family, friends and neighbors. Once you've helped yourself, you're then able to help those around you.
The same can be said of charities versus taxes. How can we contribute to charity when up to 50% of our income is confiscated by the local/state/federal government? If you had the choice between contributing to charities picked by you, or giving your money to the IRS, which would you choose?
American's turn towards socialism is scary. For the first time since FDR we have the very real possiblity of seeing European style socialism in the United States.
None of this would have happened if we'd stayed out of other's business.

The first time since FDR? Someone needs to learn some history. We had social programs funded by much higher taxes than anyone's talking about now, and we had them for 50 of the last 100 years.
