Didn't get your full economic stimulus payment this year? Good news, you have a second chance to get your stimulus money in 2009.

Didn't Get the Full Stimulus Payment?

Many people didn't get the full stimulus payment. There are several reasons for this. A large number of people had to file amended tax returns. Several people reported problems with other people claiming their dependents.

Others either made too much money or too little money in 2007. Because of this they either weren't eligible for the stimulus payment at all, or received a reduced payment.

How Can I Qualify Next Year?

Because the stimulus package is actually an "advanced tax credit on the 2008 tax return" you have second chance to qualify. If your tax situation changes you could qualify for the portion of the stimulus payment that you didn't receive this year.

What type of changes will help you qualify?

  • Increased Income
  • Decreased Income (See the phaseout details here)
  • Getting Married or Divorced
  • Having a baby
  • Adopting a child

So if any of these change you eligibility for the payment can change.

So How Do I Get My Money in 2009?

The IRS will include a worksheet on 2008 tax returns. The worksheet will help you calculate if you are eligible for a tax credit on your 2008 taxes.

Can I Get My Money in 2008?

If you didn't file taxes or you weren't eligible at the time you filed, you'll have to wait until 2009 to get the money. Also if your tax situation changed after you filed taxes (you lost your job, started a new job or had a child), you'll have to wait until 2009 to get your money. You should check with the IRS if you have specific questions about your situation. I highly recommend you contact the IRS if your situation is very unique.

Stimulus Payment is an Advanced Tax Credit

Finding details on how the stimulus payment actually works is difficult. I usually only like to refer to first hand sources like the IRS stimulus payment web site. However after many unsuccessful searches of the IRS site for information regarding the actual mechanics of the stimulus package, I've resorted to using other trustworthy sources.

My Sources

The best page I could find that is both trustworthy and accurate is this TurboTax stimulus second chance help page. I corroborated the details with this CNN Money article on the stimulus payment so I'm fairly certain I have accurate information. If you have any better trustworthy sites that have information, please post a link in the comments.

I would suggest talking to the IRS: http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html

I also am outraged on what the IRS did to me. I met all the requirements, the thing is that my wife used her maiden name as her middle name on our income tax in the past years and always got my refund in full every year. I was told that their records did'nt match with what I filed so I Dont qualify. I was looking at $1,500.00 down the drain,I don't get it! I went to the S.S. office and made the correction, then I went to my local IRS building and was told they have no way of correcting the problem and that it was a one shot deal. I also mailed my complaint to the IRS in Washington. I don't think its gonna help. But if I owed the government money they would take me to the cleaners and freeze all my assets. I don't need the tax credit, I need the money

    Dave,
That sucks. The tax credit will go directly against your taxes next year, so you'll either get a bigger refund or not have to pay as much in. However, you will have to wait till next year.

The IRS has advised people not to change their names on their tax forms to get faster stimulus payments, but I hadn't heard about this one.

[...] You must file a return by October 15th to qualify for a stimulus payment in 2008. If you don't file by the deadline you have a second chance at the stimulus money. [...]

    Gladys,

You son did not get any additional money for you. Regardless of whether ot not he claimed you, he still what have got what he did. It was very specific as to who gets what. You may have been eligible if he did not claim you but if you are living with him and he is providing 1/2 your support then he can do that. If you are contributing to living expenses such as rent and food, then you can report it to the IRS and he will problably owe them money. But I just want to say that he did not get an extra $300 because of you.

My stimulus payment has been denied because the last name of my wife does not exactly match the last name as per SSA records – this is the first time I am filing tax returns in the US (I am an alien worker) and I was not aware that the last name should match exactly. Due to this, my stimulus payment has been withheld – I cannot claim next year, because I will be leaving the country by August. I really feel let down.

    Hey Dave,

If it makes you feel any better (probably won't), I am in the same situation as you are.

I got denied because "the records don't match" even though both my wife and I filed with our SSNs and they are correct. The problem is that my wife 2006 return was filed with her ITIN because of an accountant mistake. The mistake was reported in a letter requested by the IRS itself but I guess they still don't have their ducks in a row over there.

Government… Can't trust them with the simplest things.

im confused i didnt get a check this year because i didnt work at all and didnt file taxes im getting married on october 31st does that mean that we get a check now this year when we file

  13. Corina on January 8, 2009 1:46 pm

We sold a piece of rental property in 2007. So, the sale put us over the income for the stimulus check. What form do I use to get that stimulus check this year? Obviously, our income has dropped in 2008.

  14. Ryan on January 16, 2009 9:58 am

Just a little confused on this whole situation. I'm married and have a child but for some reason we only received $900 last year for a stimulus payment. I know I don't make too much and can't seem to find a calculator to figure why I didn't receive the full $1500. I'm in the military and only make $24,000 a year and my wife only makes $14,000. Our son has been claimed by us for the last 3 years on our taxes. I guess my question is does anyone know how they figured the amounts to give people and possibly how they may have come up with only a $900 payment? Just don't see how $600 for each tax payer making $3000+ a year and one child for $300 equals $900.

  15. Monique on January 16, 2009 3:29 pm

    Ryan,
I was in the same situation and the explanation I got was, they have different brackets as far as income and depending on which one your income falls under is how they are calculating how much you get back. Even though you met the income limit for a stimulus payment, you didnt make enough, even if it were by only a few dollars, to get the full $1500. As I said, "the same thing happened to me".

  16. Angela on February 1, 2009 12:08 am

    Ryan,
I worked in 2007 and made less than $20,000…my husband was deployed to Iraq so our adjusted gross income was a little over $11,000 and with one child we only got the $900 too. I've already filed my taxes this year and it looks like we are getting an additional $600 due to my husband's income being taxable for 2008. Maybe you will be lucky and get an additional payment too.

  18. John on February 20, 2009 1:11 pm

You might want to include that internationals who had to file the 2007 report as a non resident but have resident status for tax purpose now, get their stimulus check with their tax refund for 2008.

  19. barbara on February 23, 2009 9:34 am

I have 2 children on SSI and a high school student who works. I understand the 2 on SSI will each get 250.00 but will my 15 year old qualify for a stimulus check? She didn't start working until 09/08 so she didn't qualify the first round. I don't work because I care for 2 special needs children. Will this affect her?

  21. NORA on April 13, 2009 2:54 pm

I filed 2007 taxes as I do every YEAR. I was paying court ordered child support and my tax return was never interrupted, yet when the government gave out money to help us supposably grab a holt, CHILD SUPPORT ENFORCEMENT took that money. I thought I may have been able to pay a bill or two to perhaps help my situation, but instead got deeper in dealt. Can someone explain that?

  22. DONNA on April 24, 2009 11:06 am

WHY IS THAT PEOPLE LIKE ME, WHO RECIEVES SSI, DO NOT QUALIFY FOR THE SIMULUS PACKAGE? I DID NOT GET THE PACKAGE LAST YEAR AND IT DOESN'T SEEM I AM LIKELY TO GET IT THIS YEAR. WE GET MUCH LESS MONEY THAN THE PEOPLE RECIEVING SOCIAL SECURITY, BUT THEY QUALIFY AND WE DON'T. WHAT GIVES?

  23. anna on August 15, 2009 12:21 am
