Looks like the government is going to be raising taxes on tobacco. It may now be officially cheaper to smoke weed. I'm not sure, since I'm not out pricing weed. Sure, it will raise a ton of money to go to various government programs, but it's a bad move.
They are selectively taxing our bad habits now. Those in favor of the tobacco tax will say that it's a good thing because smokers end up costing tax payers so many millions of dollars and this will cure it by making them quit. But that argument doesn't hold water.
I guarantee you that High Fructose corn syrup and candy costs the country more in dental visits and diabetes than smokers cost on the system. Then there's the legions of morbidly obese in America. Hell, why not tax fried chicken. People love eating them some fried chicken and clogging their gravy-laden arteries every day. Using the logic that smoking is bad, fried chicken is a really bad habit that should be taxed. How bout a $2.99 tax on every bucket of KFC?
Smoking, eating fried chicken every day and stuffing our faces with candy is only hurting ourselves. How about a bad habit that can not only kill yourself, but others? I would think that if they can tax tobacco, certainly something that kills others should be taxed just as heavily if not more so. Booze.
Smokers will be getting taxed because of a lifestyle choice that only hurts them. Meanwhile, let's ignore the rampant alcoholism in this country. Let's ignore drunk drivers who kill innocent people. What does the medical cost of all those liver transplants add up to?
If I smoke a cigarette, I'm not any more likely to kill an innocent family of four in my car. But if I down enough booze and get in my car, the odds go up dramatically. I could go on and on, but you get the point.
It's bad enough you are getting taxed from the cradle to the grave, but they are taxing your bad habits in between. Aim the taxes where they belong and you may actually improve the quality of life in this country rather then destroying our liberties.
