McDonald's is recalling 12 million drinking glasses that it was selling to promote the new Shrek  movie. The problem? The painted designs on the U.S made glasses contain the toxic metal cadmium. The U.S. CPSC announced the voluntary recall on Friday and warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses.

Long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects. It's a known carcinogen that can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems. The cadmium was in the paint on the glasses. The marketing campaign for the Shrek movie was going very well, so this will cost McDonalds some sales.

You know what they say. If the burgers don't kill you, the collectible glasses will.
