Many Americans can still qualify for the economic stimulus payment. This is good news for those don't normally file a tax return or may have made a mistake on their taxes.

According to a press release from the IRS, IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman wants people to know they still have time to qualify for the stimulus payment. They just need to file a tax return.

Can I Still File After April 15th?

Yes. The IRS wants people to know that you can still qualify for the economic stimulus payment after April 15th. Your stimulus payment will take longer to process, but you should still receive it this year.

What's the Deadline for 2008?

You must file a return by October 15th to qualify for a stimulus payment in 2008. If you don't file by the deadline you have a second chance at the stimulus money.

What if I Need Help Filing My Taxes?

You may be able to file your taxes online for free. If you need help filing your taxes, you can call 1-800-906-9887 for volunteer tax assistance.

How Much Income to Qualify?

You need at least $3000 in qualifying income according to the IRS. Qualifying income is defined as "earned income, nontaxable combat pay as well as certain payments from Social Security, Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement."

If You Don't Normally File

The IRS recommends that that people who don't normally file taxes should file this year. Filing this year could qualify you for the economic stimulus payment from the IRS.

Retirees and Disabled Vets are two groups the IRS is targeting to make sure they get their stimulus payments.

What If I Already Filed?

The IRS says it's not too late, even if you've already filed.

Q: What if I already filed my return but have additional income to report that would make me eligible for a stimulus payment?

A: If you have additional qualifying income for Social Security, Veterans Affairs or Railroad Retirement benefits that you would like to report, you can file an amended return using Form 1040X, but allow 8-12 weeks of processing time before making any inquiries about your payment. [New 4/17/08]

Pass This Information to Friends and Relatives

The IRS is trying to get the word out to everyone. Unfortunately, there are still some people who either haven't heard about the payment or don't know they qualify. If you know someone like this, pass the information along to them. More than likely, they could really use the money.

I forgot to mention I filed using a 1040A and just wrote "STIMULUS PAYMENT" across the top and then added direct deposit info and then signed my name. An H&R Block friend told me this was all I needed to do.But to date I have got NO response from the IRS.Can I still use this free file method that was mentioned ? Thanks so much for all your help.

    Paula L. Spaulding,
It sounds like you need to contact the IRS. Go into your local office if you can. They can help you straighten this out.
    Good Luck
