Obama's pick for Secretary of the Treasury has a problem. He didn't pay his taxes. How can a guy that heads up the Treasury (you know the department that contains the IRS) not pay his taxes?
According to various news sources Timothy Geithner didn't pay self employment taxes while working for the International Monetary Fund.
[N]ewly released information about the tax goofs by Geithner, regarded as a brilliant financial markets specialist well-positioned to deal with the nation's considerable economic problems, could complicate the [nomination] process.
Wierd. The guy who's going to head the tax collecting arm of the government and lead us out of this financial mess, can't even pay his own self employment taxes? And we wonder why there's a problem in this country.
The average citizen would get raked over the coals by the government but this guy gets rewarded and appointed to head the department responsible for collecting taxes. It's like appointing Al Capone to head the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms).
I can sympathize to some degree. Figuring out the complicated tax code is no easy task. But when the guy that wants to head the department can't even do it, maybe the time has come for tax reform.
Simplifying the tax code would be change I can believe in.
