When traveling in a new city, the urge is to find restaurants that are comfortable and familiar. But you actually want to do the opposite.
You won't find great food at low prices in a place full of tourists like you. Time to rethink your approach. One of a restaurant's biggest costs is rent. So if menu prices are to be low, what the restaurant pays for its rent has to be low too. Makes sense right? So you want to find out of the way spots that are patronized primarily by locals. Strip malls are a good bet.
Another approach is that where there are large immigrant populations, there's often inexpensive, but good food. The larger an immigrant group in an area, the higher the quality of food tends to be. They serve those who want good taste but on a budget.
Try it. You may find some new and cheap places. Diversity is always good.
