The IRS Stimulus Payment program is a real mess. Many people haven't received their payments. Some haven't received the amount they were supposed to get according to the IRS web site. Some people have questions relating to child support or other debts owed to the government. Many people are searching the internet because they don't know how to contact the IRS by phone.
The IRS stimulus phone number is harder to find than it should be. In fact it took me a few minutes on Google to find it. I'm publishing it here so everyone has it. It's the first number in the table below.
Contacting the IRS By Phone
I've listed the phone numbers for the IRS below.
| Description | Number |
|---|---|
| IRS stimulus payment (rebate) questions | 1-866-234-2942 |
| IRS refund questions | 1-800-829-1954 |
| Main IRS Assistance Phone Number Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. | 1-800-829-1040 |
Expect to Wait on Hold
When I called the IRS stimulus number, I was greeted by a nice message that told me the IRS was experiencing heavy calls volumes regarding the economic stimulus/rebate. I didn't stick around to see how long the wait was. However, many reader has mentioned it's a very long wait.
Your Local Office
Some people have had better luck with their local IRS office. You can find the phone number, address and business hours of your local IRS office here.

My SS# ends in "01″ so I assumed that I would have recieved my economic stimulus check by now. I filed my 2007 return on time. I have rapidly growing debt and I was counting on this payment to keep my head above water financially. According to the payment schedule, I should have recieved my payment weeks ago. It's not that I don't appreciate the governments help, but what is holding it up, and when can I expect to recieve my payment?
Thanks so much for publishing this! The IRS web site hides this info.
I actually drove to the IRS office in Edison, NJ, to speak with a representative face to face. She entered my SS number and my name into the computer and told me that no information has been posted regarding my tax return. I asked if she could at least verify that my return was recieved by the IRS… she repeated that she had no information. I asked if there was anyone that I could speak to by phone, email, or snail mail. Again, the answer was "NO". I have a friend in Florida who sent in his return near midnight on April 15th, and he already recieved his stimulus check by mail several weeks ago. This is ridiculous.
F*CK THE IRS AND HUD! THEY F*CKED US OUT OF 5400.!!!! WE DID NOT GET OUR STIMULUS PACKAGE. JUST A STIMULUS UP OUR BUTT, WAS ALL. THEY CLAIMED WE REFINANCED OUR FHA/HUD LOAN, WHICH DISQUALIFIED US FROM ANY FURTHER REFUNDS FOR YEARS TO COME. THEY ARE THE BOTTOM FEEDERS/SUCKERS OF THE WORLD. I HAVE WORKED ALL OF MY LIFE, AND THESE C*NT BASTARDS HAVE SCAMMED US. NO WONDER THERE ARE SO MANY TIMOTHY MCVEIGH's OUT THERE! NOT THAT I WOULD EVER KILL SOMEONE…BUT IT IS LIKE SOMETHING IN MY MIND SNAPPED WANTING REVENGE WITH THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.
I HOPE OTHERS FEEL THE SAME WAY…
PISSED!
I have experienced the same, eberywhere I look there is no information about my payment. Someone has to know! You won't get any answers from the IRS! I still don't know anything!!!
We haven't received ours either.
THANK YOU for the phone numbers, I looked everywhere!
It took me awhile to find them. The IRS does a pretty good job of hiding some of these numbers.
The stimulus phone number was totally useless to me. I received my letter saying I was getting it. But, the phone number is automated and despite answering all questions into the phone the system has no information on my payment. It was due to be mailed on May 16th. Over a month late. I paid my taxes in full before April 15th. I owe the IRS nothing. The closest office is over 2 hours away! I cannot believe that you cannot even talk to a human when you have a legitimate problem.
i totally agree with mary lee! 100%!!!!!!!! mine was also to be here a month ago but yet no word of it and they dont have any info on mine either….yall suck! dude seriously!
Thanks for agreeing with me Shana, but you should not have stated the last bit. Those asking… Where is my check? When will I get it? Why didn't I get more?, are acting like this blog and the paper who wrote the article trying to be helpful to us, are the ones in charge of the stimulus payments. That is the irs.gov website, not the wealthyreader.com website, which is where you are now. This site, nor the author of this article, will know nothing about your refund, where it is and why you didn't get what you expected. They just wanted to be nice and post what they knew on contacting the IRS about this issue. My post was just to state that the phone number is pretty useless, as you cannot speak to a real person that way.
Well, everyone that I know has already received their stimulus checks… I haven't even received a letter or anything yet. I filed on time, and my last two SS# digits are "01″ so I should have been one of the first ones to get my check. I tried the IRS website, tried the phone numbers, and even drove to the IRS office and spoke to a person face to face. Nobody can tell me anything about where my check is, or what I can do to find out. I guess I'm just screwed. Thanks Uncle Sam!
could you please inform me about my stimulus check where it is now. last digit of my social security is 09
Are you guys not noticing that this blog is NOT by the IRS. They do NOT know where your check is or when you will get it!!!!!!
Mary Lee,
I'm just posting my own experiences with the IRS economic stimulus rebate process here because this seems like a good forum to help spread the word, and in some hope that someone will PLEASE post a reply that might help me, or others. I don't think anyone is blaming the Wealthy Reader for any of this! People are just blowing off steam. You obviously have know affiliation with the IRS. Thanks for providing this forum.
Hi Drew - I wasn't talking about your post. I am like you. My # ends in 05, no check, can't get hold of anyone or any answers. It is nice to rant and hopefully someone will post here with answers. I was talking more to all these people that are repeatedly and usually rudely asking when they will get the check or blaming the blog as if they are the IRS. Some people are posting, that have obviously not bothered to read the blog. I am sure it is fine to rant about your check and the IRS here, but posters should be nice to the people who provide this outlet and are just trying to help.
BTW: This is not my blog, but I have a website with a large forum, so I know the pain of dealing with people who are not bothering to read the forum before posting rude comments that have nothing to do with the forum.
To all:
I first off want to thank this website for posting the phone number to the IRS Economic Stimulus hotline. You can also find the phone number on http://www.irs.gov as well as Economic Stimulus Calculators and an interactive database that attempts to find your stimulus check's status.
I received a letter in the mail last week from the IRS stating that I was supposed to receive $1,800.00 for filing married and with two (2) kids. To my suprise I received a check in the mail yesterday for $888.55. I am very grateful that I have received something from the government but when I tried to call the Economic Stimulus Hotline regarding the discrepancy the automoated attendant will not patch you through to a live human. From my understand of the hotlines information, you must wait six (6) weeks before you can speak with someone regarding your check. I am a little frustrated that the IRS tells you one thing and does another but like I had mentioned before I am glad to have received something.
I hope the information at the top of this blog helps some people in the the never ending quest for their stimulus check or even for answers regarding their stimulus check.
I just called the IRS phone number that was posted and although I only got a recording, at least it was an informative one and my first glimpse of hope that we are actually getting a check! After entering husband's SSN, filing status and # of exemptions, I was told that our $1200 check will be deposited on June 27th. It also said that if the money is not there on Friday, to wait until July 2nd to contact my bank as well as calling the IRS back. So with fingers still crossed, we shall see what happens!! Good luck to all still waiting!
I was suppose to get my paper stimulus check mailed on no later then May 23, 2008. I still have yet to get a check nor have I even got a letter saying that I was going to get a check. I've called a few #'s but there all recordings that didn't help me at all. Does anyone no ANYWAY of finding out where my check is? Its been over a month now! I was really counting on paying bills with that.
Ashley,
If you live close to an IRS office you can stop in. They should be able to help you.
Mine was supposed to be mailed on May 16th. The phone message now tells me that it is mailing out on July 4th and that it is $609.36. It is supposed to be $900. Yes, I paid more than enough to get my full amount and I have a child and my taxes were paid in full with no outstanding debt of any kind to the government. No idea why it was almost 2 months late going out or why it is short. An large nationwide CPA accounting firm does my taxes, so it was correct. My gross was under $75,000. I do not use H&R Block or any of those fast tax kind of places.
To Carlos:
I also received a letter from the IRS saying i was to receive 725.00 to my surprise i only got 475.00, can't figure out why? I don't owe child support, back taxes or anything. Just another way of getting our hopes up and smashing them at the same time
My check was supposed to have been sent out on June 27th. Since I've not received it yet, I called the rebate number today and got the recording. When I finished entering the information they required, the automated voice told me I did not qualify for the check because someone else had already claimed me as a dependent! I am a widow and am nobody's dependent, so I am at a loss as to what happened, and of course, I can't get thru to a live person to ask the question! Has anyone else out there had this problem?
Jeanne,
It happens more often then you might think. You need to contact the IRS either by phone, or better yet at your local office to get this fixed.
Good Luck!
Managed to get through to an actual rep again this morning. Wait time was about 12 minutes; I dialed in around 7am EST. When you get to option menu that asks if you're calling to check eligibility press 1 just start hitting 0 and eventually you will hear the new messages and be asked to hold for a rep. Good Luck!
i still havent recieved my amended tax return,i turned it in on april 15, and it should have been here within 6 to 8 weeks, its now months later.and i havent recieved my rebate. this is all sum BULL***T! im glad im not dying of starvation, or about to be evicted!!!and this stimulus sh*t is supposed to be helping, but its putting people in to more dept!!!!!
To Luis-thanks for the info! We finally got through to the IRS-our check was supposed to be mailed out on June 27th, and they are saying that they have not mailed our check out yet-and that it won't be mailed until July 25th
Sara, could you tell me how you finally got through? What number did you use?
to everyone, anyone that can help me, my last 2 digits are 49, and i filed for the pasy 4 years, owe nothing, also that my check was suppose to be mailed our june 6th (by there little time sch) but i have recieved no paper, or anything, like i tried calling the irs, 3 hours on the line waiting, my younger brother filed after working 1 month and got his, what should i do, anyone with any idea of something?
This is the number I used:1-866-234-2942. Go to the option "stimulus rebate:"check eligibility", and once you get to that selection, keep pressing the number zero, until you hear a voice telling you that you are being connected to an operator-I pressed the zero only 2 or 3 times. Now, you will need to have at LEAST an hour or 2 to burn, because the wait time can be long, but trust me, the wait was worth it. The IRS had not even sent our rebate check out yet (it was supposed to be mailed on June 27th. Now they are telling us that it will not be mailed out until July 25th
Update - On 7/15/08 I received a letter from the IRS informing me that I made an error on my tax return and I owe an additional $69. That may not sound like much, but I work as a freelance artist and often earn less than $10,000 a year. I am one step away from living in a van down by the river. To add insult to injury, I have not even received a letter regarding my economic stimulus check, even though my last two digits are "01″… I am angry and totally disillusioned with this country. I used to be a patriotic American. I have lived here all of my life, but am now considering moving to Canada or Mexico, where citizens are treated wth fairness and respect.
I am eligible… no complicating situations. Check was supposed to be mailed in late May. Haven't heard boo and the check is now 2 months late. I am following Sara's direction (thanks Sara) and now the IRS has decided to tell us that they are getting too many calls to bother keeping us on the line… click. I'm starting to feel like maybe I should do the same thing to the IRS next time the expect a payment from ME. grrrrr.
TO: Drew Costigan, with your 01 number, you should have had it by June 11th, at the latest. Do you owe any Child Support or any related past Federal Taxes? If so, they will take this…But you should get a letter telling you this, for sure. If you are all clear, and owe nothing and filed your taxes for '07, then you have nothing to worry about. Let me know if you need further help. We have been through HELL with them this year…garnishing all our said to be rec'd funds.
Best to you.
Dirk
My name is Barbara and I am writing in behalf of my fiance' who is an disabled veteran. He filled out the papers for him to receive the stumulus payment and it was suppose to be mailed on the 4th of July. I received mine iMay and was shocked that it came so fast. My finace' is also unable to work because of his disabilities. Is there anyone out there who has the answer to where the check is. I realize the 4th was a holiday, but the mail shouldn't take this long. Bah humbug!!!!!
Drew - I received a letter like that from the IRS right before I received the stimulus letter telling me I would be getting my check. When I received it, it was minus the amount they wrongfully claim I owed. Usually if they decide you have an error, then your stimulus check is delayed. It appears they are finding LOTS of errors this year.
They will also hold your check if you filed bankruptcy within the last year
Apparantly I am not alone in this. I have received nothing (letter or check)from the IRS. I meet all the eligibility requirements & owe no money to the gov't or anyone. I filed my taxes on time. When I check the website it's like I am not even in the system. According to the website & phone recording my check - should I be receiving one would have been direct deposited in May or mailed June 27. I have called 800-829-1040 & 866-234-2942 pressing '0′ repeatedly but I was not transferred to an operator - they just hung up on me.
Remember a few years back when the IRS was cleaning up their image??
It seems the neediest/lowest income people are the ones who get nothing - first time around with George W I did not qualify for the rebate because my income was too low.
I am starting to believe that this is another of George W's scams to make him look good but doesn't actually happen - bet he got his rebate/stimulus check already.
I honestly question if America can survive six more month's of George.
I filed my taxes in February. I am wanting to find out if I will get a stimulus check or not. When I called the IRS all I got was a computer voice. My address is [removed address]. I need some information, Can someone help ? WAP
William A Patton,
I'd love to help you but the IRS is the best source. If you have a copy of your tax return why not go to the IRS web site and check on your stimulus payment: http://www.irs.gov/app/espc/
Here's an article that explains it:
http://wealthyreader.com/articles/using-the-irs-stimulus-payment-rebate-calculator/
Here is another article that should help you out:

"THIS IS WHAT I DID"
Well I had to use the 1(866)234-2942 number 14 times before it would stop hang'n up on me.
"due to high call volume" CRAP!!!!
I can wait!!!
I am on hold right now and hope I can get some info. My last two are (22) and I was supposed to get the check a while back.
Why is it when you owe them money, they can get you on the phone no prob! But no, when you want to get some little bit of info, to many numbers and no happy ending.
I would like to kick the guy who runs this call center Sh*t right in the BALLS!!! Twice!!!
good luck people (KEEP CALLING)
I found this on another website and it totally worked for me! I got to talk to a real person. I moved a year ago and they still had the wrong address on file, which was why I never got my check. I started the conversation with: I just want to make sure the IRS has my correct address and didn't mention the stimulus check at all, which was probably why they were willing to help me. Once they found my address had changed they were more than willing to help me check the status of my check and said a new one would be arriving in 3-4 weeks. Be prepared to wait on hold for about an hour. For me, it was totally worth it to speak to a real person!! Hope this helps!
Dial 800-829-1040, press 2 for individual tax return status. You will be further prompted to dial additional numbers, however don't be fooled into doing so. THE TRICK IS NOT TO DIAL ANYTHING ELSE. In other words, after about 5 repeated, "Please choose your option", the system will automatically put into the system where you will be placed on hold for a live person assistance. The hold time can be from 5 to 15 minutes, but you get in.
Jen,
Thanks for Tip!
Thanks for all the info on contacting the Irs I am planning on doing so the first thing Monday am
They keep telling me they're too busy, then hanging up on me.
My check should have been mailed out in early June, but I haven't gotten it yet. What should I do now?
Sally,
You could try going to local office.
I've been on hold after trying Chris' trick to actually speak with a real person. However, I thought since I was waiting, maybe someone here could help me. I am a 22 year old college student, still claimed on my parent's taxes, but live on my own out of state, paying out of state tuition, have my own bills and expenses and work 35 hours a week, paying taxes on every dollar I work. I don't qualify for some reason. Is there a loop hole to the whole "if you're a young college student claimed under your parent's taxes, you do not qualify" ? Just looking to help pay these tuition bills! Thanks.
Jessica,
If anyone can claim your or does claim you as a dependent, you do not qualify.
It is not the IRS that you need to be upset with. The IRS can do NOTHING wihtout congress. They enforce acts by congress! If you want to get mad at someone–get mad at your representative for making the tax code so impossible to understand!!!!
