You probably already recieved your Census in the mail, but it may be followed shortly after by a call or e-mail from con artists pretending to be from the government. Keep yourself safe and don't fall prey to con-men.

The census has a total of 10 questions, and none of those questions should ask you for a bank account, credit card or Social Security number. If it does, then it is not legitimate.

Just fill out all 10 questions and return the form as soon as possible. If you don't return it in a month that prompts a visit. And only fill out one form for the residence where you spend more than 50% of your time.

The census will never try to contact you through email. Never click on or open an attachment that says it is from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Also if you don't mail back your form and a census worker comes to your door they will have:

  • A badge
  • A handheld device
  • A Census Bureau canvas bag
  • A confidentiality notice.

Just ask to see their identification and their badge before opening your door and answering any questions. It's best to stay safe and know that you are not getting scammed.
