The economy is bad enough, but to add insult to injury, how would you like to be attacked by your ATM? That's what happened in South Africa. One of South Africa's banks equipped 11 of its ATMs with pepper spray to deter crooks from blowing them up or installing a card-skimmers.
Sadly, pepper spray was released during routine maintenance on one of the ATMs, spraying three innocent people, who had to seek medical attention. One person summed it up like this: "Imagine getting sprayed by a malfunctioning ATM. At which point you will be an easy target if any muggers are around,"
Just a friendly reminder that even though the economy is bad, it could be worse. At least U.S. ATMs don't attack you. Yet. Well, if you don't count the fees anyway.
